Title: Four short antiphons RCM101 cover
Composer: John Taverner
Editor: Nick Sandon
Reference: RCM101
Price (GBP): 4.25
Description: These four short antiphons illustrate the state of flux in English church music in the late 1520s and 1530s. The Jesus-antiphon Sancte deus and the Mary-antiphon Ave Maria are very concise settings apparently written for the evening devotion at Cardinal College where Taverner was choirmaster between 1525 and 1530. Fac nobis secundum hoc nomen suave is an antiphon of the Name of Jesus, on a larger scale and in a more imitative style. Sub tuum presidium is a Mary-antiphon, in which the text’s plainchant melody is employed as a monorhythmic cantus firmus. Now in a second edition. For five voices: SATBarB. viii + 13 pages. ISMN 979-0-57039-091-5.
